Thousands of Magento 1 Stores Hacked: Update Now to Stay Secure

Last weekend it was listed that about 2,000 Magento 1 stores were hacked in what security specialists defined as the “largest campaign ever.”

With Magento 1 having reached end-of-life on June 30th 2020, stores yet working on this earlier version of the software are no longer accepting further security updates, which gives them much more vulnerable to being exploited by hackers.

What happened?

Named“CardBleed,” the attack included hackers planting malicious characters onto the victim website to log payment aspects registered by buyers through the checkout method.

The attack has hit about 2,000 Magento stores, with the huge majority working on the now-defunct Magento 1.x software. This variant of the software no longer supports new security updates or patches, creating it extremely comfortable for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities.

How do I stay secure?

With new security warnings appearing on a regular basis, it’s necessary to install new security updates quickly. This involves updating your core Magento installation, themes and plugins to the newest variants.

As discussed, this newest hacking attack frequently hit websites working on the earlier Magento 1.x software, which no further supports important security updates. If your store is yet working on Magento 1, we fully suggest migrating to Magento 2 quickly.

Why move to Magento 2?

Because many attacks on eCommerce sites include hackers trying to take sensible business data, having an old website is a primary warning to both your company and your buyers. A hack could harm your status and leave you in the hole of current information security laws.

Apart from having your website safe and durable, shifting to Magento 2 makes many other benefits for your company:

  • More agile performance, with speed enhancements of up to 20% over Magento 1.
  • Enhanced checkout method to increase conversions and decrease cart abandonment.
  • New tools and functionality to perform it more comfortable than ever to maintain, develop and market your store.
  • Out-of-the-box responsive design that gives a better buying action over all devices.
